Almighty / Toystate

This project was from 2007/2008 and was built in Adobe Flash. I wanted to include it because of the amount of effort that went into this game. I was very proud of the team and the outcome.

ToyState hired Almighty to build an online game that corresponded with their physical toys (trucks/cars, etc…). Children (with the help of their parents) would register their toy’s “VIN” in the system which would populate that vehicle in their virtual garage. From there, they could customize their vehicle(s) and their garage, drive their vehicle around Motor Island, play games, and win in-game money that went towards more customizations and trinkets.

We had a team of ~5 people including art directors, copywriter, and three Flash Developers (including myself). My involvement was to build the shell, vehicle driving system, map/world, and a few mini-games.

DEBUG MODE

Technically speaking – this project was steeped in challenges. Of challenges, the driving system/world was the most challenging. I turned to a very early port of Box2D for the collision physics, and created a separate Flash program that allowed me to load a tile image, apply boundaries, and save out a SWF that contained coordinates and hot-spots. As the user drove around the map, I had to load the next set of tiles while unloading the last. Likewise, the user could “warp” to another part of the map; which was some more tricky programming.

I built in a debug mode and console that allowed me to test everything on the fly.

MINI-GAMES

My Motor Island featured 8 mini-games for patrons to play. Each game concept was based on the region of the map where they were found. I ended up building 4 of the 8.
